Generic Dental Night Teeth Guards Review

Posted on 02. Jun, 2010 by Ben in Teeth Grinding Guard Reviews

As you know, I suffer from teeth grinding (or bruxism), and to try to allay the effects of it, I sleep with a night-time teeth guard.

Now on one end of it, you have teeth guards that are custom-made by your dentist and are really expensive. On the other end of it, you have teeth guards that are sold in retail stores and are considerably cheaper. In terms of efficacy and comfort, it doesn’t mean that the most expensive one is the best. On the contrary, you might even find a good dental guard that’s pretty affordable off-the-shelf. The problem is, which?

At first I tried with a generic no-brand night guard.

It worked, but wasn’t the most comfortable thing in the world. You could hardly talk properly with it, and it made my upper lip bulge out so that closing my mouth wouldn’t be possible. Not that it was much of a concern – both points are petty much moot when you’re asleep.

However, it did made me drool a lot, sometimes to the point where I would wake up with my pillow soaked.

It’s been 2 months with this mouth guard now though, and I have to say that if there’s one thing about this, it’s durable. I could see the teeth marks on the guard, and while it’s shocking to actually see the physical damage that your teeth can inflict overnight, it’s also reassuring to know that the piece of plastic is absorbing the damage.

I like this piece only for its price and durability – I’ll be checking out other night guards to see if there’s anything better and more comfortable.

Update: I’ve did a SleepRight NO-BOIL Secure-Comfort Dental Guard Review, check it out.
